For this first physics in media assignment, I chose to write about a television show, The Good Doctor, as physics is integrated throughout all three seasons. This television show is about the life of and autistic residential surgeon named Shaun. He grew up with a brother and his two parents. His parents did not accept his autism, but his brother did. However, his brother died at a young age, leaving Shaun to feel as if he was completely alone. Just before his brother passed away, Shaun and his brother became friends with Dr. Glassman, a mentor and friend. Dr. Glassman became the guardian of Shaun after his parents neglected him. He cared for him and also landed him a job as a residential surgeon at a hospital in San Jose, California. Essentially the television show follows the life of Shaun, his background and career, through the lens of autism. Despite the support of Dr. Glassman, his fellow surgeons and president of the hospital were skeptical of his abilities. It took a couple of episodes for the characters to see Shaun’s potential as a surgeon. Shaun continued to prove his abilities in the surgical room and within individual patient care. He did this with the use of physics, mathematics, and his profound knowledge of medicine.
For example, in season two episode one, Dr. Glassman is diagnosed with a brain tumor. Shaun is in denial and tries to find other solutions for Dr. Glassman’s physical symptoms. He uses math and his knowledge of biology to find a solution to his cancer. Also, in season two episode one, the hospital gave medical assistance to a homeless community. There, Shaun and a fellow residential surgeon met a gentleman who needed further medical assistance from the hospital. However, none of the doctors understood what was wrong with this gentleman and misdiagnosed him. One day, Shaun is sitting in Dr. Glassman’s company throwing crumpled paper into a trashcan when he comes up with the idea that their patient may have kaleidoscopic disintegration. Shaun uses physics to determine that their patient has a brain tumor. The physic calculations helped Shaun diagnose the patient and the residential surgeons were able to save his life.
