The beloved Disney show, Hannah Montana, can actually teach us a bit about anatomy when we look at the episode titled: “Get Down Study-Udy-Udy.” In this episode, we see Miley studying for a particular science exam topic she had been struggling with for a while, bones. In order to study for this test, she puts together a song to help her memorize the bones in the body. The song she creates, known as The Bone Dance, is a parody of one of her actual songs titled “Nobody’s Perfect.” Although incomplete, the song references bones located all the way from the metatarsals in the foot to the parietal bone in the skull. Miley enters the class and begins to perform her bone dance in order to remember all the bones needed for her exam.
Although fiction, this episode is incredibly similar to our life as nursing students. In fact, during the muscle and bone exam, I remember a few people who actually watched that part of the Hannah Montana episode hoping it would aid them in their exam. Similar to Miley, we find crazy ways to memorize bones, muscles, blood vessels, and other parts of the body. These ways we try to recall information are called memorization aids of which there are many. The most popular types include mnemonics. Mnemonics are an aid designed to create a poem or saying that helps you remember information, often incorporating the first letter of each word to be related to the actual material. Similar to Miley’s situation we come to realize that a lot of science heavy material comes down to memorization, and us students discover ways to remember the material, however crazy the way may seem.
