Perceptions of Grey's Anatomy

Post created by Jenny

PERCEPTIONS of doctors portrayed on television shows like Grey’s Anatomy begin to shift the perceptions of the views idea for what they distinguish a real-life doctor is supposed to act like, which is not accurately portraying the reality (Quick, 2009).

“Medical drama has been one of television's most popular genres” (Goodman, 2007)

The T.V. show, greys anatomy offers viewers numerous of different scenarios in the hospital setting. However, it’s the character development, the emotional aspect of depth, and romance amongst the show that keeps the viewers engaged. However, the one negative aspect of the TV show is the neglect of accurate portrayal of real-life hospital scenarios. However, this issue may not be obvious to the non-medical viewers and is a small detail in the overall structure of the show. However, not every medical approach is incorrect, there is some truth to the medicine they practice. “In their attempts to craft compelling plots, the programs' creators often resort to miracle cures that constitute medical misinformation—the consistent overuse of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and violation of the strict policies surrounding organ transplant procedures are two of the most obvious examples” (Goodman, 2007).

Season 12, Episode 8: There was a patient, Eli, who had diverticulitis and was treated with antibiotics and had a bad reaction, which in return had developed toxic epidermal necrolysis. Due to this there was severe damage to the skin and mucous membrane which makes it a life-threatening disease. In class we learned how important our skin (the integumentary system) is to our body and protecting us against disease. Our skin is our very first and foremost barrier to our body. Toxic epidermal necrolysis can make “the skin begins to blister and peel, forming very painful raw areas called erosions that resemble a severe hot-water burn” (Genetics home reference, 2020). The cutaneous sensations allow us to sense things through our skin which has receptors.
