QUARANTINE 19!

Post created by Emily and Morgan

Hi everyone! Em and Mo coming back quarantine style. Recently, we’ve noticed that Instagram has taken the world by storm. More and more influencers are posting about things that they have been doing and creating during the quarantine. For example, Kim Kardashian has been cooking meals for her family, Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) came out with his own tequila brand, Kylie Jenner has started gardening, and Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have released a wine called… you guessed it, “Quarantine.”

We have seen all over social media that the amount of alcohol people are consuming during quarantine is insane. As anatomy and physiology students, we are thinking about the long term effects this excessive drinking will have on people. We have recently learned that when someone consumes alcohol, it goes to the stomach, and then once part of the alcohol is absorbed in the stomach, the rest is absorbed in the small intestine. One of the liver's main jobs is to get rid of toxins that are inside the body. Continuous, heavy drinking can damage the liver, and create scar tissue. Alcohol increases the amount of acid inside the stomach, which can cause severe stomach pain. It is suggested that eating while drinking alcohol will help to absorb the acid.

With drinking comes eating. On Instagram, people have started to bake and cook more, in order to occupy their time during self-isolation. We have seen that people like simple food hacks, so they can make quick and easy snacks. While at home, making a yummy meal can be rewarding, so people are doing more of it. It is very common for people to snack when bored; therefore, when people are stuck at home with “nothing” to do... they make food! Now, these foods may not have the best nutritional values but they sure are delicious ;)

We hope that you are all exercising, eating healthy, and spending time with your loved ones! Maybe try picking up a new hobby during this “shelter in place” order and try to avoid the quarantine 19. Remember, take advantage of these sunny days and get some vitamin D (as Em always says, make sure to wear sunscreen!).

Peace and Love Y’all!
