Recently (thanks to Disney+), I became hooked on National Geographic's documentary series, One Strange Rock, hosted by Will Smith. The show centers itself around several key factors that make Earth a unique and life-sustaining planet. In addition to Will Smith's commentary, the show features ten U.S. astronauts who provide thoughts, feedback, and information throughout the series.
One episode in particular struck me with its depiction of the Earth's fragile coexistence with the Sun. To sum up, the Sun is not our friend. In fact, if it had it's way, we'd all be dead. Like, dead dead. Between UV radiation, solar flares, and oh, the incredible temperatures it emits, our entire planet shouldn't exist, let alone us.
However, thanks to Earth's unique position in the Solar System, it's unique core, and the atmospheric gases encasing us, we are safe, for now. Eventually, our shield will crack, and we will be in deep, deep trouble.
Having the former Fresh Prince of Bel Air comment on rocks and worms and monkeys is entertaining in itself, however, One Strange Rock is truly a fun-filled, relevant popular application for exploring our world and knowing more about who we are. Go check it out. :)
