Words alone sometimes are limiting when explaining to the patient their medical conditions. This is because most patients have not necessarily taken medical classes where they can get the knowledge that educates them about the conditions.
Sometimes, certain conditions are so scary that it is hard for the doctors to fully disclose the risks that the patient and the family might have to take. Take an example of the movie based on the true story, “Brain on Fire”. The movie portrays the struggle that the doctors, family and Susannah Cahalan (the patient) went through.
Not only because of the difficult of diagnosing Cahalan who was suffering from “Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis” but also the lack of understanding this rare auto immune disease. In such cases, we need technology to help diagnose and assess the risks that both the doctors, the patient, and the family must take to be able to save a life.
VR (virtual reality) system developed by former Israeli fighter pilots helps neurosurgeons rehearse difficult procedures and show the patient what will happen. Visualizing what is happening and what is likely to happen by the patient can help them make even better decisions when it comes to complicated surgeries. VR system once operated well can give more informed and detailed graphics of the conditions that the patients are facing. This also helps during the physician’s preparatory work.
That is why I think we need medical holograms in the nursing program of Northwest university. This would be a great tool to help the students visualize and understand the increasing revolving medical field.
The future of medicine is brighter, today, the virtual reality visualization platform is in 15 leading US hospitals, such as New York University, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Houston Methodist, George Washington University, Mount Sinai, Stanford and Children’s National Hospital. This is exciting news. But my biggest question as always is how do we bridge the gap to help the poor African countries that can not afford these expensive pieces of technology?
